You longed for the Sea
You longed for the sea.
The warm, blue, sparkling sea,
lapping the shores
of your idealized childhood.
But, ignorant of times and tides,
we found only an immensity of grey.
You sat in frozen immobility,
staring through the windscreen,
refusing to leave the car.
I think it was then I realized
the ice had closed over you.
Emanating from our glacial bed,
frost crept across the window,
shrouding the view.
The carpet crunched underfoot.
Our breath froze in clouds,
our fingers numb, the living room
a permanent deep freeze.
Even the flowers in the garden
were rimmed with tiny spikes.
The lawn a forest of spears.
The trees glassy tridents.
The next day you packed
your bags and left.
A thaw set in.
